Medicinal mushrooms and the hallmarks of cancer: mechanistic insights for complementary chemotherapy:
This review examines the potential role of medicinal mushrooms as complementary agents alongside chemotherapy by mapping their mechanisms of action to the Hallmarks of Cancer, the key biological characteristics that enable tumor development and progression. The review integrates mechanistic evidence, preclinical studies, and clinical findings, focusing on the effects of medicinal mushrooms and their constituents on immune function, inflammation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, cancer cell metabolism, the tumor microenvironment, and the microbiome.
Rather than viewing medicinal mushrooms as a replacement for conventional cancer treatment, the article explores their potential as complementary agents that may act on pathways overlapping with some mechanisms of chemotherapy while also influencing biological processes that may be less directly addressed by chemotherapy. Alongside the mechanistic rationale, the review examines clinical evidence regarding immune function, treatment tolerability, adverse effects, and quality of life.
